The internet thrives on lies.
The simple answer is because “you click.”
For the past few weeks, my online feed was stuffed with negative headlines, fake promising titles, and toxic content.
Every time I opened a social media app, I was served nonsense.
My 15 days of google history also reflected this. Needless to say, I felt miserable, lonely, and loser-like for the past few weeks.
I thought to myself, “Why is it so difficult to escape from this matrix that I’m in? How do I even know what is true or false?”
Being hospitalized for over a few weeks gave me ample time to reflect and think…and, of course, surf ;)!
The simple answer I found was, “It’s not the internet that’s to blame, but the people behind it — namely, some self-help gurus who spin lies and half-truths all over the place.
Anyone who uses negativity (title, thumbnail, emotional trigger) to help me in my self-development journey is not worthy of my time and attention.
This isn’t to say that all self-help gurus don’t have valuable things to offer, but there are those out there who are in it purely for the money.
They’ll tell you anything and everything only to fill their pockets without even stopping to think about the impact they’re making on your mind.
Below are five lies (scandalous ones) I could reflect on.
#1. This “X Product” Will Help You Achieve “Unlimited Success” in Life
The old bait and switch. Instead of empowering you by teaching you to “self-belief,” they insert a dependent variable — system, course, book.
I am not saying their content might be BS. But using your weakness — an emotional trigger such as this one to make you believe it will help you attain success or happiness is wrong.
The other day I saw a self-help guru running a YouTube ad selling their course in the name of “unlock unlimited success.”
How do I know what kind of success they mean?
How do I know their content is the truth and not just fabricated?
The answer is you can’t.
For some, success = money, while for some, it could mean anything else, such as good health, peace of mind, personal growth, or having a great relationship.
Don’t fall for a vague result-oriented promise. Nobody can guarantee you success in life, ever!
#2. “You Don’t Need Any Education or Skills to Make Money Online”
This lie might sound like music in your ears. Why?
Because you focus on the glamorized result of making money “WITHOUT EDUCATION.”
This lie undermines the importance of having an education. It’s also an insult to the educated.
I’ve been earning my living through the internet for three years.
But it wouldn’t have been possible without learning.
Every day I feel like a noob who doesn’t know how to use the tools correctly.
If someone told me they make $50,000/month with no education or skill, I would be skeptical.
It’s only logical to think that an individual has gone through training and has acquired the necessary skills to do a job without disclosing it to the public.
It’s true that you don’t need to have a degree on paper, but if you want to make money online, you do need to have the “right” education and skills.
#3. How to Manifest “X” in 24 Hours
BS! It has all been written over this title.
The law of attraction is the new fad, and people want to manifest everything they desire.
Fake self-help gurus will try to sell you their “proven” system on How to Manifest Anything You Want in 24 Hours.
Though “time frame” is a major ingredient in manifesting but it’s not a controlled variable.
The manifestation depends on many other factors like:
Your inner being
Conviction
State of mind
Actions
Environment.
The only thing you can do is set your intention, take action, and keep taking steps toward the direction of achieving it.
I have manifested many things in my life, and I can boldly state that time varies for different things.
Some things you attract instantly, while some take time.
But the best part of manifesting is you enjoy the waiting period.
So don’t believe the “Magical Manifestation” lie.
#4. You Can Make Money Doing What You Love
This one is pretty common, and it’s essential to highlight it here.
Fake self-help gurus will tell you you can make money doing what you love — without paying the price.
This price can be time, effort, dedication, relationships, etc.
Every gain in your life is a trade-off.
You must let go of “something” to gain what you want — even if you do things out of love and passion.
You might have heard success stories describing people making money from doing what they love. But they didn’t become successful overnight.
You cannot earn money by simply lying in bed and living off your dreams.
Unless you are ready to hustle a lot more than an average 9–5 office job, this statement isn’t true.
#5. You Can Have Anything You Want
No, you can’t have anything you want.
Here’s why:
First, we humans have insatiable wants.
Second, the universe is unpredictable, and sometimes, it gives us things we didn’t even ask for.
The reality is you get everything you need.
I know you might ask, “Do I need problems in my life?”
As harsh as it may sound, the answer is “ yes.”
Discomfort, problems, and difficulties help us grow as individuals. How else will we learn if everything is provided to us on a silver platter?
Had I not been discontented with my job, I wouldn’t have considered becoming an entrepreneur.
Had I not had a broken life, I wouldn’t have known the power of forgiveness.
Had I not had anxiety, I wouldn’t have known how to calm my inner being.
So you cannot have anything you want, as promised by these fake gurus.
You can get all that you need, and trust me, it’s more than enough.
Final Word
Don’t trust me because I am X or have Y amount of followers.
Don’t trust me because I wrote this article.
Don’t trust me because I tell from my experience
Trust because you feel your inner voice.
Take what resonates with you and discard what doesn’t — you are the best judge for yourself, not anyone else.
With that, you will have the power to make an informed decision and create a life that works for you.
